I will be 55 in March. I am single, and I have an ordinary job with ordinary wages. Life is expensive and I am not rich by birth. To do what I do, and to live like I live (nothing special but good enough for me - I have everything I need), I sometimes work 7 days a week. If I want more of everything, I will have to work more. If I would become disabled or chronically ill, which is always possible, I would end up in the gutter, because government allowances do not cover the cost of life.

It is as simple as that.

Even though caregivers, housewives, and many other people deserve great respect for what they achieve every day, the societies we live in do not honor them with a decent income.

It is as simple as that.

All that being said, I  myself would never turn to any kind of internet forum for any kind of support. Lots of people come here to ask something from Jeff Bridges or the public at large, usually one hundred thousand bones or clams or whatever you call them. In my opinion it is unrealistic.

However, I wish you every success with Caregiver Pictures.

Good luck with your new endeavour, Carol.

Martine, you are so honest, which is something that I love about you.

But may I say, you don't have an "ordinary" job, and I mean this in a different sense. You are not what we deem as "extraordinary" in our society that worships the likes of the Kardashians, or Honey Boo-boo, or whatever trash is out there, true. You are not a movie-star or an astronaut, or something sensational that goes on talk shows and we're all in awe of . . .

You are a nurse. And you returned to school later in life to become one. In my experiences, nurses are rockstars.

When I had a miscarriage before Jacqueline was born, I was devastated. All I kept saying was "I wanted this baby." Even thinking of it now I feel sad, but it was the nurses who helped me. The nurses were amazing, lifting my spirits, sharing their own personal experiences, and reassuring me that it would get better. They were right. It did.

When Jacqueline was born, I was terrified to touch her - in case she would "break." (New mother and all). Nonsense! Sarah, the nurse said. She was amazing. She helped me bath her, change her, ease my fears/

When my mother was in the hospital, again it was the nurses whom I formed relationships with. I knew them all by name, "Hi Michele," they would say as they saw me each day. Not only me, they helped my mom a lot. They loved her, and would come in and chat with her, making her day a little brighter.

My sister-in-law, as I've mentioned is a nurse, like you, helping people in psychiatry. She had prevented suicides, (some, sadly not all) and helped people get the help they need.

And now, my Dad. All the nurses I know by name and they know me. I get greeted with hugs, smiles, "are we doing a good job - is there anything you need?" They give me current reports as to Dad's progress. They tried to ease our comfort when my dad fell and had to have hip surgery a half a year ago, and we didn't think he'd make it.

Doctors save the life but nurses make the patient want to carry on.

Where would we be without nurses?

My hat is off to you, and to all the nurses, Martine.
