Martine I'm sure that not one dead person minded being eaten by their pet dog.  Although their relatives most likely hated the deed.

I had a lovely little cat once who got out and caught a bird.  She brought it to me with all the dignity a cat could muster and laid it before my feet.  It was then that the little bird flew and at the same time I realized what my cat had done. She had caught a live bird to give me as a gift.  She watched the bird as it flew around the family room in a confused frenzy of relief at still being alive and in fear of being caught again.  My cat had no intention of catching it again.  She had done her job and brought it to me once.  Twice - nope.
Eventually the bird found the open front door and away it flew.  Cats do not belong outside.  They kill too many birds.

Actually, that's a nice story. When our dogs go outside in the backyard, we put a bell on them for two reasons: One, so we know where they are, and two, so it gives warning for other animals. My cats are indoor, and though they would prefer otherwise, they have no choice. But you can get bells for outdoor cats too.

I live out in the middle of nowhere and we get all kinds of critters showing up from time to time. There's farm cats that live outside that usually keep the mice population under control but the dog has been chasing off the cats. Every once in a while snakes get into the basement following mice in. A couple times a year I have to catch bull snakes and put them outside they are usually pretty cooperative and let me handle them but sometimes they feel cornered and hiss at me. Manx cats are good mousers and most terriers are great for pest control. One night the dogs wouldn't stop barking and they had a beaver cornered under a pickup which is strange because the nearest water source that a beaver would enjoy is at least 10 miles away. The worst is when the dogs find themselves a porcupine. The vet wanted a couple thousand to remove quills and said the dogs might not make it so I had to wrestle with the dogs and pull them all out with pliers. Maybe one of these days I will get a lazy indoor cat just so I can name it Jimmy Whiskas.

Gardener, you've really had a time with the critters !  Especially when pulling out porcupine quills from your dogs. Yikes. Making you a canine Hero.

One of the dogs tried biting the porcupine and ended up with several quills in the roof of his mouth that is why I had to wrestle with it a big German shepherd/ Rot/ lab mix. He was happy once the quills were removed and luckily didn't bother porcupines anymore.
