I have very mixed feelings about The Crown. I quite enjoyed it at first but I didn't like the second series. Too sensationalist and made to appeal to American audiences. It also made me uncomfortable that it was about people who are alive and being portrayed as so obnoxious (Phillip). Perhaps he really is that awful, but even so it was difficult to watch. But when the third season comes on I'll still watch, of course!

I haven't seen Breaking Bad but I loved Malcolm in the Middle. We watched some spy movies with the Malcolm guy in recently (can't remember his name - sorry) and he played exactly the same character. Fun movies, though!

I never knew much about the British royalty.  My mother disliked them. (Her parents both came from Ireland and believed they had reason to dislike the royals.)
My mother would call them a bunch of welfare queens.
Me - I never cared one way or the other.  Until about a year ago.  That's when it finally got through my thick skull that "the royals" include a whole shitload of people who never have to work if they don't want to just by virtue of being born to a Windsor!  NO!  That is just not right!
When the full scope of this con hit me I was in disbelief!
I have nothing against any of them personally and they believe - I'm sure - that they were special and born to live like  ... royalty.  But they are not special.
Alright - if I had to choose between the Queen and Donald Trump I'd pick the Queen and all her sprawling family.
At any rate - Nicky how do people put up with this charade?  It's just not right!

I have watched both series of The Crown.  Although some of it is probably fairly close to accurate there are a lot of mega inaccuracies and fictional (covered by 'based on') fairy stories.  As is known by many on here, I am not a royalist (see Ali's comments re birth rights .... pah) but do have an interest in history, recent and ancient, so do watch this sort of stuff (enjoy actual documentaries more).  By the way (possible spoiler here) the Jackie Kennedy 'story' is just that.  It didn't happen.  They did meet at an official function and the half mast after the assassination is true, but the Jackie dissing the queen, then the queen being informed of it, is not, nor is the 'friendship'.  They never met and had tea at the Palace lol

Keeping to the theme.  I have also watched Victoria.  Again some is 'based on' and artistic licence has been issued but I enjoyed that more.

I tried to watch Breaking Bad but just couldn't get into it.  I have downloaded it and might try again.

I read that The Queen does watch it so would love to be a fly on the wall when she does.  I wonder if she sniggers or gets annoyed.  I imagine it must be difficult to watch so wonder if she really does.  I suppose it might be hard to ignore it completely though.

Never mind how Phillip is coming across, I'm more miffed at Margaret.  We all know she really was very much a Princess but boy she's played like she's one hell of a pain in the ass brat too.  The Queen Mum had a lot to answer for I think.

Looking forward to series 3.

Ali - I think from the other point of view it must be so depressing to be born into that family and have your whole life mapped out - no choices of what to be "when I grow up." Or who you can have as friends, etc. Makes me claustrophobic to think of it. And Charles is so old now, when most people would retire, but he hasn't actually started his grown up job yet. Horrible.

Haggie, I heard that one of the grandsons (Harry) loves the series and talked the queen into watching it. So weird. And I heard the writer interviewed saying that obviously the queen isn't intelligent and so they were looking for an actress who could portray that naturally. An insult to both the queen and the actress! I was surprised by how evil the queen mother is - perhaps I just missed out on that truth? And as for the Jackie Kennedy part, that's what put me off the series - it was so horribly Americanized, I thought. Ridiculous.

OK, end of my opinionated speech! 😉
