Again, I must apologize. My error was in contributing on this topic at all, for I have been misunderstood. I have not found fault with anyone, only with an attitude of dismissal that turns its back on the fact that "choice" is assumed to be made by adults rather than more often by underage individuals being introduced to harmful substances by those who have other interests in mind.

One can't know until it is too late whether or not an addiction will result ~ until much later ~  Logic dictates: "Why take the chance?"  But what child has the wisdom to hold off ~ unless counseled and shown by example that this is the smart way? Sometimes not even then.

Those who admire or sympathize with the drug / alcohol industry / culture won't get it (as has obviously come to light here.) and I'm out of place, I know. I'll say no more after this. I'm not understood, but judged. You think I've no comprehension, no compassion. Just the opposite ~ I've a great deal of experience and personally dealt with these matters.

Our society already has "hell to pay" on many levels ~ or should I say, our CHILDREN ~ punishment? We're reaping the rewards ~ all of us, already and not just in the prisons and with fines.

It matters not which is worse of the two, alcohol or "weed." I feel the point has been missed entirely ~ but I'm done.

Thanks. Be well ~

You're so defensive, Dusty, people were just expressing differing viewpoints on various aspects of the issue, covering all bases so to speak. And describing their personal experiences.
We can't make all drugs and alcohol disappear from the world--that's not going to happen. And as was pointed out, they serve a valuable purpose in some respects--with cancer patients and mortally wounded persons for example, to help relieve their agonies. Drinking in moderation is even reputed to help physically, just one or two glasses of red wine a night, or one or two of mixed drinks, etc. Many can't restrict themselves to just that, of course and should never touch the stuff. It's so awful when people drink themselves to death. That tragedy must have happened to someone in your family? Was it Jer? I'm deeply sorry, truly. I hope you will stay "hang out" here and contribute.
I told my teenage niece, "You want to stay pretty, and young looking, don't you?" and she replied yes of course, and I said, "Then don't drink, smoke and take drugs." She's  a junior in college now and still hasn't partaken of drugs and drinking.  I didn't know what to tell her to reach her that I thought would be much more effective than appealing to her natural teenage vanity.

Citing a prior comment I made ... "If, in the future, marijuana could be approved fully for medicinal use, hopefully, without the corrupting influence that plagues our drug industry, it can join the ranks of other helpful substances that are here to aid in healing and alleviating illness as it was intended. "  ~

Truly, no offense taken ~ I know no offense was meant ~ But ~ Not having labeled anyone else, I appreciate not being "labeled," as well ~ having "bent over backward" to be fair to all, with the understanding that my opinion is only my opinion, thank you ~ for gracious input. Having loved those with "differing views" it is inaccurate for others to assume I don't see or understand their opinions ~ I do.

(I would also like to make the point that there is a fuller and a much more enjoyable life available without artificial substances ~ a concept quite foreign to most ~ and invite them ~ in fact, I dare them, ha ha!  ~ to consider that.)

Again, thank you ~ I hope to comment on other topics at another time ...

We will be glad to read your comments on any topic, Pamela.

It is a good idea to appeal to your niece's teenage vanity, Pinkie. I guess Keith Richards is possibly a clear example of lost looks? [wink]

Ha! David beat Goliath yesterday evening. My team won by 78-75. Unbelievable. Please read below how Unics Kazan describes "a hot fight at the cold seaside":

UNICS had a play in the second group stage in Ostende, a small city in Belgium. Knowing the importance of the match, the players of  UNICS were highly motivated to win. Goudelock, Zisis, Kurbanov, Kaimakoglou, Veremeenko started the play. In the second minute the score was 10:4. Gillet had his three-point successful attempt and soon the opponent- team was leading the score 12:13. In the 6-th minute Goudelock managed to get the leadership back-17:15, then the points were level. Veremeenko was the last to trhow in the first quarter of the game, 25:24.

Eidson's and Sergeev's long arc shots helped scoring and UNICS became ahead by 7 points, 31:24- in the second minute. Then Ponitki's three- point successful basket. Eidson had his successful long- distance shot, 36:29. Again Ponitka brought down the score, 36: 37- in the 5-th minute. 42:40- after McKee's three- point shot. Vougioukas +4, 44: 40. Goudelock finished the second quarter of the game, having changed the score to 47: 46. Some statistics should be given : Ponitka (12), Gillet (8) , Eidson (9), Kurbanov (6). Two- point shots: "Oostende" -10//18, UNICS- 9/16 . Three -point shots - 5/10 against 6/16 in UNICS. Fouls: 11/13 against 11/12.

UNICS led till the third minute of the 3-rd quarter. Gillet's three- point -59: 66. After Kourbanov's arc shot- 65 ;68. There was a strong feeling that UNICS would win in the final as it used to happen. Zisis, Veremeenko, Goudelock were doing their best, there were episodes when the score was level: 71:71 (Veremeenko's dunk-shot), 73:73, 73: 75, 9 seconds left, 73: 76 after the foul. Goudelock's help- 75: 76, but, to our regret, no time was left and the opponent- team held the ball.
75: 78.

Besides developing a heart condition I stayed sober as a judge during all the turmoil and excitement. Oh, today's shift was a late one.

This intermezzo leads me straight back to marijuana and alcohol. The Huffington Post wrote about it last year: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-armentano/alcohol-or-cannabis_b_3799972.html

Here you will find some myths and facts: http://www.ndsu.edu/alcoholinfo/students/marijuana_myths_facts/

There is lot more, of course. It is up to you to explore further or dive into the challenge of nihilism.
